Facelifts can reverse the effects gravity has on the face, and make you look younger and fresher. As we age, we all experience the effects of gravity and age-related changes. Stress, wear and tear and lifestyle factors also contribute to the unwanted changes we see in our faces, such as deep creases, lines, wrinkles, folds and fat deposits. Men and women in their forties and older commonly decide to “turn back the clock” by having a facelift.
A facelift involves removing excess fat and skin from the face, tightening relaxed muscles, and re-draping the skin over the face and neck. A facelift can be done on its own or along with other facial procedures such as a forehead lift, eyelid surgery or nose reshaping. The results give you a more youthful appearance, with smoother, tighter skin, while removing the unwanted lines, wrinkles and folds!

Facelift Surgery Preparation Recommendations
Dr. Abramson of the Abramson Facial Plastic Surgery & Rejuvenation Center may recommend you take steps to prepare for your facelift surgery, including:
- Eat a diet rich in nutrients in order to help your body heal.
- Please refrain from smoking for the two weeks prior and several weeks after your surgery.
- Do not take aspirin and ibuprofen products.
- Discuss all medications, vitamins and herbals with Dr. Abramson.
- Eat or drink nothing after midnight the evening before your surgery.
- Do not wear makeup or contact lenses on the day of your surgery.
- Have a friend or relative drive you the day of surgery and stay with you a day or two to help.

Facelift Surgery Procedure Overview
It’s important to the entire staff of the Abramson Facial Plastic Surgery & Rejuvenation Center that each patient understands the entire facelift surgery process before they elect to have surgery. Below is a step-by-step explanation of the facelift surgery procedure:
- You will be draped, your face thoroughly cleansed with antiseptic solution, and you will be anesthetized.
- “Hyperangulated” incisions will be made in the hairline, and all work will be performed through these incisions. This is Dr. Abramson’s unique technique, which prevents the hair shaft from being destroyed, ensuring that normal hair growth resumes after surgery.
- The skin will then be separated from the underlying fat and muscle. Membranes will be tightened and excess skin will be pulled back and removed.
- Sutures will secure the layers of tissue and close the incisions.
- The surgery usually takes several hours, depending on the extensiveness and number of procedures performed.
- Your face will be bandaged, and the bandages will be removed 1-2 days after surgery.
- Stitches will be removed in 1-3 weeks.
- You may shower and wash your hair after bandage removal.
- Oral pain medication will be prescribed to control any pain or discomfort you may experience.
Post Facelift Care
After your facelift surgery, you can expect to be up and about in 1-2 days, but you will need to take it easy for at least one week after surgery. You will need to be gentle with your face and hair, since you will be tender.
You must also avoid strenuous activities for two weeks, get plenty of rest and eat a nutritious diet. You should be able to return to work within 10-14 days, after your energy returns and swelling and bruising have decreased. Camouflage makeup can be worn to cover bruising. We recommend Jane Iredale cosmetic mineral makeup, which actually aids in healing while providing effective coverage.
The swelling, numbness and bruising are normal and they will go away over the course of a few weeks. Healing will be gradual, and the visible results will appear over time, so be patient!
